Fueling the Future: How the Cascadia Accelerator is Powering Sustainable Aviation
January 20, 2026
The Pacific Northwest is taking flight in sustainable aviation. The Cascadia Sustainable Aviation Accelerator aims to make the region a global hub for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Such a move is the main key to reducing carbon footprint. The startup has already collected $10 million in state funding. Additionally, $10 million more has been collected with the help of philanthropic support. This idea brings together corporate leaders, elected officials, and researchers to solve one of aviation’s biggest challenges. And this challenge is SAF, and how to make it more affordable.
Just a quick reminder: SAF is derived from renewable sources like plant oils, agricultural waste, algae, and used cooking oils. It’s possible to mix SAF with traditional jet fuel to power existing aircraft. Nevertheless, the cost of this fuel creates challenges with its usage. What’s important is that the accelerator supports the startup by providing it with the equipment, R&D resources, facilitating funding, developing supply chains, and promoting SAF-friendly policies.
Collaboration at the Core of Innovation
The accelerator showcases a true public-private partnership, uniting industry, government, and academia. With the help of the equipment needed, joined professionals, and custom networks, the startup has a chance to turn this idea into a scalable solution. Companies such as SkyNRG, Montana Renewables, NXTClean Fuels, and Twelve are already building facilities to produce commercially viable SAF.
Nowadays, the startup has a temporary base at Everett’s Paine Field. However, they plan to build a permanent facility by 2029. This will make the region the one with green aviation and stimulate the economy. The idea is also to demonstrate how collaboration can solve global issues.
